October's two ruling cards trace the same arc as its seasons — Libra's Justice carries the first half, Death arrives with Scorpio to carry the second, and the passage between them is the distance between weighing something fairly and admitting the scale can't hold everything.
- Justice still walks through the opening weeks of October, scales level, sword upright, finishing the work Libra season started at September's equinox. The New Moon in Libra on the 10th asks for one more clear-eyed accounting before anything shifts — what's actually balanced, what only looked balanced from a distance. Venus stationed retrograde in Scorpio a week earlier, on the 3rd, so even while Justice holds her measured stance, something underneath is already pulling toward territory she doesn't rule. Pluto stations direct on the 15th, and the ground Justice has been standing on starts moving before she's finished her count. October opens with her still trying to get the numbers right, even as the numbers start changing on her.
- Death steps forward when the Sun crosses into Scorpio on the 23rd, patient, unhurried, carrying none of the fear the card's name suggests. Where Justice works by measurement, Death works by ending — nothing gets weighed once it's over, it just stops. He arrives a week after Pluto's station, which means the season's real turning already happened underground before he shows up to name it. Mercury turns retrograde in Scorpio on the 24th, one day before Venus backs out of Scorpio into Libra, and Death's teaching gets harder to ignore once the planets are moving backward through the same territory he governs. The Full Moon in Taurus on the 25th lands right in that overlap, physical and unwilling to be rushed, asking the body to sit with what the mind wants to explain away. Death's answer is to let the ending be an ending. Samhain arrives on the 31st, and whatever Death's been pointing at all month finally gets its door.
Together, Justice and Death teach October's central lesson. Justice says: get the accounting right, even if it takes the whole first half of the month. Death says: some things were never going to balance, and the accounting was never the point.
